Scientific notes

Fractura ossis femoris sanata cum deviatione. A healed transverse fracture of the diaphysis at the division line between the upper and the middle thirds.

Transverse fracture.

  • On the front side of the diaphysis, just above and below the callus, there are vast regions of bone with periosteal response, most likely of inflammatory origin. Evidently, the cause of the hypertropic callus is both dislocation and bad fixation of the fracture and the response of the bone to the contusion of the surrounging muscle (myositis ossificans) with the following infection (periostitis).

  • It was healed with a displacement in length and thus with a shortening of the whole bone by about 90 mm, and with an angular displacement of the distal fragment backwards at a dorsally open angle of 140 degrees.
